Lancefield Romsey Little Athletics Update

The 2009/10 season of Little Athletics is now underway, with competition starting on a clear day on the first Saturday in October.

Numbers have built steadily since registration day and the club now has almost 100 athletes registered.

Each Saturday the children, aged from 5 to 15 years, converge on the athletics track at Park Lane to learn a range of throwing, jumping and running skills.

The Lancefield Romsey Little Athletics Centre caters for children of all ages and abilities, and teaches skills which are useful in a wide range of other sports.

The emphasis is not on winning but on setting and then beating personal best times – an aim reflected in the Little Athletics slogan ‘Be Your Best’.

Little Aths will run until early April, with a break for the Christmas holidays, from 9am each Saturday at Park Lane.

This season Lancefield/Romsey athletes will be able to travel to the Kilmore and Gisborne tracks for competition against other area clubs.

There will be opportunities for athletes aged 9 and over to contest the regional titles early next year, with those successful travelling to the state finals at Olympic Park in Melbourne – always a great experience for all!

Lancefield Romsey Little Athletics Centre is run by a small but enthusiastic and friendly bunch of volunteers who aim to provide a fun and supportive learning environment for the children while teaching them the correct techniques. Events taught include discus, shot put, javelin, hurdles, sprinting, distance running, long jump, high jump and triple jump.

It’s important to note some talented professional athletes began their careers running around the little grass track at Romsey, including Australian international runner Collis Birmingham, who still holds a record at the track.

There’s still time to register for this season. Cost is $85 per athlete, with discounts available for families registering three or more children. The Centre t-shirt, which must be worn at competitions away from the centre, costs $15.
